The movie is made in two parts – Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali: The Conclusion. The first part registered itself as the most successful movie in India, with all eyes set on the latter part. A whopping budget of 250 crores was invested in the making of the second part – making it the most expensive Indian movie ever.

2. Dhoom 3

The Dhoom franchise is also a much star-studded, extravagant affair. Right from hot bombshells, exotic locales, power-packed action, you name it – Dhoom films have it all. What’s amazing to note is that the budget of each succeeding movie crossing the ‘modesty’ threshold in terms of its investment. Dhoom 3, boasted of one of the most expensive songs – ‘Malang’ – ever made in Bollywood, which cost the makers a whopping INR 5 crore.

It took INR 140 Crores to remake the Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz starrer ‘Knight and Day’ with our desi cast. The filmmakers roped in Andy Armstrong (Hollywood action director who worked on The Amazing Spiderman 2) to deliver the breathtaking and death defying stunts.

4. Happy New Year

Bollywood has no shortage of brainless, extravagant movies and Happy New Year best exemplifies that. Made on a staggering budget of INR 150 crores, the movie had the best opening in Germany for any Bollywood movie.

Again, the plethora of elements like action, drama, romance, song & dance and sheer filmmaking made up for this huge expense.

6. Robot

Star power is one of the most prominent things in India and that was exactly the case with Robot (aka Ethiran) as it starred the God of Indian Cinema Rajnikanth and beauty queen Aishwarya Rai. The actor turned robot at an eye-popping cost of about INR 150 crore. The super opulent film had everything, from robotic lions, several kinds of Rajinikanth robots, huge sets, to anti-gravity stunts. It was the first Indian film to have a Legacy Effects studio, which enabled them to get prosthetic make-up and animatronics. Talking about costumes, 57 dresses were prepared for Aishwarya, whereas suits for Rajinikanth’s robotic version, Chitti, were made from copper.

7. Ra.One

Starring Shahrukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor, Ra One was a special effects masterpiece. With a budget of around INR125 crore, Ra.One realised SRK’s childhood dream of becoming a superhero. Apart from the costly VFX, what came as the second biggest expense was the costume. While Khan’s latex costume ranged around INR 1 crore, Arjun Rampal’s red suit was made of 3-inch thick solid rubber. Interestingly, the only reason the movie worked was due to Shahrukh Khan’s lip-syncing of Akon’s Chammak Challo. Talk about unity in diversity!

Made on an exorbitant budget of INR 125 crores, Kochadiyyan was a saga of revenge undertaken by a son for his father’s name and his kingdom. The movie was an animated movie that featured Indian cinematic stalwarts Rajnikanth, Deepika Padukone, Sharath Kumar and Jackie Shroff.

9. Bajrangi Bhaijaan

An actor for whom stripping off his shirt is second nature; Salman Khan had mellowed down a lot for this movie based on such a noble subject. Bajrangi Bhaijaan introduced Salman like never before and well. However, that didn’t come so easily as the film in all its grandeur retarded the makers by INR 90 crores.

10. Baahubali: The Beginning

Registering itself as the most successful movie in India by popular vote is certainly not an easy task; a humongous amount of investment is guaranteed. Therefore, Baahubali didn’t deter from this expectation and was apparently made on a scale of INR 250 crores. The magnificence and opulence makes at a huge price, of course.
